The word “entertainment” comes from the Medieval Latin intertenere, which means to hold inside: The prefix inter meaning “inside,” and tenere from the Indo-European root tense “to stretch”—literally, to keep something stretched out or to maintain it in place. It also suggests that entertainment can involve an audience. Bates and Ferri (2010) define entertainment as an activity understood objectively, that involves communication between text and audience from an external stimulus, o ers pleasure, requires an audience to exist and occurs in a passive form.
