The clown at the birthday party, a Broadway musical, your friends fighting over the last potato chip–these are all examples of entertainment. Entertaiment is the amusement or distraction that comes from a performance–the kind of thing you can see, hear, touch, taste, or smell. We usually talk about theatrical entertainment as shows, visual entertainment as things to look at, and audio entertainment as mostly music. But the word is also used to refer to something children do that prepares them for adult responsibilities, such as child rearing (5), or develops skills important to their future lives, such as motor skills needed for sports and music (14).
