What is a Team Sport?

Team sport

Team sport are sports that rely heavily on teamwork, strategy and coordination between the players to succeed. Examples of team sports include football, basketball, volleyball and rugby. These sports differ from individual sporting pursuits such as mountain climbing where participants compete against themselves rather than fellow competitors, and may not feature an opposing team or point scoring (although some of these pursuits can be entered by teams).

Being part of a team is a great way to meet new people. Over the years, you will forge strong bonds with your teammates that can last a lifetime. These friendships can help you in a number of ways, including increasing your overall life satisfaction as reported in recent research.

According to former Dutch national volleyball coach Joop Alberda, the key aspects of a successful team are communication, leadership and the joint development of rules, goals and strategies. He also suggests a pyramid of principles that should be in place in order to achieve these:

One of the most important elements is respect. This is because a good team needs to be respectful towards the other team as well as their own members. Respect is something that will help you in all areas of your life whether it’s at work, in school or in your relationships.
